feet in the dirt (2016)

Concept & performance: Angélique Willkie
Site-specific solo presented in the Gardens of the Grey Nuns Motherhouse, Concordia University, during the Association of Critical Heritage Studies Conference – co-hosted by Concordia and UQAM.

The fact that the Grey Nuns Motherhouse was built in the height of the colonial period allowed me to consider my own status as a child of a former British colony (Jamaica) peopled by slaves. Inspired by the idea that many different feet would have walked and worked the gardens of the Motherhouse before my own, feet in the dirt allowed me to honour and explore in performance my own ethnic origins and personal chronology. This work was a not-yet-articulated discovery of the praxis of blackness in my dramaturgical explorations.
